About the Special Saturday Workshops

Special Saturday Workshops are a Resource Stage seminar series designed to give ideas more room to breathe.

Instead of compressing material into short sessions, these workshops slow the pace and focus on understanding fundamentals, asking questions, and applying concepts in a practical way. The goal is to help participants walk away with tools and workflows they can confidently use in real productions.

Workshop Overview

Are you still relying on Winamp, an old tape deck, or improvised playback setups to run audio cues for your show? Or maybe you’ve started using Show Cue Systems but want to feel more confident and consistent in how you build and run cues.

This Special Saturday workshop offers a hands‑on introduction to Show Cue Systems (SCS), a widely used audio playback platform for theatre and live performance. Led by the Horizon Solutions team, the day focuses on practical workflows for running sound in a live environment, with an emphasis on reliability, clarity, and good cueing habits.

While the primary focus is on SCS, the workshop will briefly touch on other types of audio cue systems to help participants understand what tools are available and why SCS is commonly chosen for theatrical playback.

Throughout the day, participants will work through real‑world scenarios and explore core SCS concepts, including:

Monitor displaying code.

Understanding the SCS interface and workflow.

Folder icon with two documents connected.

Adding and organizing audio files.

Checklist with three completed tasks.

Building playlists and cue lists.

Black infinity symbol with two triangles pointing in opposite directions.

Creating and managing loops.

Speaker with musical notes and connection line.

Assigning and managing audio output devices.

Three vertical sliders with circular knobs, commonly used to control settings.

Adjusting levels and basic playback parameters.

Laptop displaying a flowchart or organizational chart.

Structuring a show file for reliability during performance.

The focus is on building habits and workflows that translate directly to live and theatrical use.

Hands‑On Learning Experience

This is a fully hands‑on workshop.

Each participant will be able to work directly in a workshop version of Show Cue Systems, using provided show files that mirror a real production scenario. Together, the group will build and run a sample audio cue sequence from start to finish.

To support learning:

  • Participants must bring a working laptop (PC‑based systems).
  • A temporary full‑version SCS license will be provided for the workshop.
  • All required audio files and show files will be supplied by Horizon Solutions.
  • Headphones are strongly recommended for working with audio content.

This approach allows participants to follow along step by step and leave with practical experience they can apply immediately.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is suitable for participants ranging from beginner to intermediate levels.

It is ideal for:

  • Sound designers and operators.
  • Stage managers and technicians.
  • Educators and students.
  • Anyone responsible for running audio cues in live performances or in theatrical settings.

No prior experience with Show Cue Systems is required, but familiarity with basic audio concepts will be helpful.
